Starting January 1, 2014, federal law stated that everyone must have health insurance, which meant about 40 million additional patients would need to see the doctor. However, there were no more doctors to provide care for these new patients. Expectations were that it would start taking weeks to get an appointment with the doctor. Physicians will be even more hurried than ever and need to see more patients per day, which means less time spent with the doctor and more time in the waiting room. I was afraid this was going to adversely affect the precious physician-patient relationship and affect the overall quality of healthcare. Consequently, I deliberated over the current state of medicine, and upcoming changes, and decided to create an office environment that nurtures this physician-patient relationship. Although, it was difficult to leave the traditional practice I started in 1998, I felt the changes in medicine would erode my ability to provide the personal attention that I feel is appropriate, and my patients deserve.
